We are a boutique valuation company with a specialty in the valuation and analysis of intellectual property (IP) and other intangible assets. IP is generally recognized as patents, trademarks and trade dress, copyrights, and trade secrets. Other intangible assets include software, databases, customer information and relationships, engineering drawings, contracts, leasehold interests, and assembled workforce, to name a few. We regularly perform valuations, economic analyses, and forensic accounting analyses for purposes of taxation complaince, due diligence, and litigation. Accordingly, our analyses and opinions are prepared to withstand rigorous contrarian review by auditors, government examiners, and opposing experts.

President
John is a valuation and damages expert. He has performed valuations of assets and business interests in a variety of industries and contexts with particular expertise in the valuation of intellectual property (IP) and other intangible assets. John has provided deposition and trial testimony as a damages expert, a valuation expert, and a computer technology expert in state and federal courts. In the course of his valuation career, John has valued hundreds of business interests and intangible assets for purposes including economic damages, taxation and regulatory compliance, transfer pricing, investor due diligence, IP licensing and transctions, and merger and acquisition transactions. His work in IP valuation is wide-ranging: from patent rights of the Apple iPhone to trademark rights for 3M products to literary rights of three Pulitzer Prize winning authors.
John is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and holds the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) designation awarded by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He is further designated by the AICPA as Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) and as a Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP). John is also an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), a designation of the American Association of Appraisers, which requires 10,000 hours of documented experience in valuing assets and business interests. In addition, John holds the Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) credential awarded by the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA).

Prior to Vanguard, John managed engagements in the Valuation, Modeling and Economics practice of EY (Ernst & Young LLC). Prior to joining EY, John was a vice president with Willamette Management Associates (acquired by Citizens Bank), where he led the firm’s Intellectual Property Valuation Services practice. Prior to joining Willamette, John was a vice president in the dispute consulting practice of Kroll (formerly Duff & Phelps). Prior to Kroll he served as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Willammette Management Associates (a business unit of Citizens Bank) is a national valuation and financial advisory firm founded by Dr. Shannon Pratt in the 1960s that became a recognized authority in the valuation of closely held business interests and assets. The firm was later led by Robert Reilly, a Valuation Hall of Fame inductee and notable expert in the valuation of intangible assets. His books and publications, along with Dr. Pratt's, have been widely recognized as foundational to the valuation profession. John was privileged to work closely with Mr. Reilly on numerous engagements. In addition to being a regular contributing author, John served as an editor of the firm's award-winning journal Insights (Journal of Microeconomics) that focused on valuation and intellectual property topics. |

Prior to his career as a valuation analyst, John was a software developer, inventor, and entrepreneur. In one instance, he led the technology development of a startup company focused on analyzing Internet-based social networks using data analytics and machine learning methods. The company received venture capital funding and won several accolades including a top 50 finalist in the San Francisco-based TechCrunch business competition. For his pioneering technology efforts, John was issued six patents from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
